Not so transitory

US equity indexes closed broadly weak, SPX -38pts (0.8%) at 4646. Nasdaq comp' -1.7%. Dow -0.7%. The Transports settled -0.4%. R2K -1.6%

Summary

The day began with...


Headline y/y CPI was 6.2% vs 5.4% prior. Ex food/energy y/y: 4.6% vs 4.0% prior. It was a pretty hot number, and the US capital market was moderately riled.

The SPX opened moderately lower, but only to 4663, with an opening reversal to effectively fill the opening gap to 4684. With Evergrande officially defaulting, there was a secondary wave lower in the afternoon to 4630, with a moderate bounce to settle at 4646.

Volatility picked up, the VIX settling +5.3% to 18.73.
