Weekend update - World equity markets

It was a bullish month for most world equity markets, with net monthly changes ranging from +14.3% (Argentina), +7.8% (India), +7.3% (Australia), +5.4% (Brazil), +4.8% (USA), +3.3% (Germany), +2.9% (South Africa), -0.6% (Japan), -1.8% (China), to -2.8% (Russia).

It was a bullish year for most world equity markets, with net yearly changes ranging from +360.1% (Argentina), +27.6% (Japan), +22.3% (Brazil), +20.3% (Germany), +18.7% (India), +13.7% (USA), +11.6% (Russia), +8.4% (Australia), +4.6% (South Africa), to -3.7% (China).

Lets take our regular look at ten of the world equity markets.

USA - Dow


Germany – DAX


Japan – Nikkei


Brazil – Bovespa


Russia - RTSI


India – SENSEX


China – Shanghai comp'


South Africa – Dow


Argentina - MerVal

Australia – AORD

Summary

Seven world equity markets were net higher for December, with three net lower. Argentina lead the way up, whilst Russia was rather powerfully lower. 

Nine world equity markets were net higher for the year, with one net lower. Argentina managed a monstrous gain of +360.1%, whilst China was -3.7%.

The USA, German, Brazilian, Indian, and Argentinian markets broke new historic highs into year end.

Eight world equity markets are trading above their respective monthly 10MA, the two exceptions being China and Australia.

Eight world equity markets have positive monthly momentum, the two exceptions being China and South Africa.

Looking ahead

It will be a short four day trading week, with Monday CLOSED for New Years Day.

Another year settles

US equity indexes closed a little weak, SPX -13pts (0.3%) at 4769. Nasdaq comp' -0.6%. Dow -0.05%. The Transports settled -0.6%. R2K -1.6%

Summary

US equities opened in minor chop mode. There was a moderate cooling wave, the SPX printing 4751, with a minor recovery to settle at 4769.

Volatility was a little mixed, the VIX seeing a mini spike to 13.19, if cooling back to settle -0.2% to 12.45.

US equity indexes closed a little mixed, SPX +1.8pts (0.04%) at 4783. Nasdaq comp' -0.03%. Dow +0.14%. The Transports settled -0.15%. R2K -0.4%

Summary

US equities opened in micro chop mode, if leaning upward, the SPX printing a new cycle high of 4793, and settling at 4783. Overall price action remains distinctly tedious.

Volatility remained subdued, the VIX settling +0.3% at 12.47.

Midweek chop

US equity indexes closed a little mixed, SPX +6pts (0.1%) at 4781. Nasdaq comp' +0.2%. Dow +0.3%. The Transports settled -0.5%. R2K +0.3%

Summary

US equities saw a day of considerable micro chop. The SPX did manage a new cycle high of 4785, and settling at 4781. Volatility was ground lower for a fourth consecutive day, the VIX settling -4.3% to 12.43.

Boxing day gains

US equity indexes mostly closed moderately higher, SPX +20pts (0.4%) at 4774. Nasdaq comp' +0.5%. Dow +0.4%. The Transports settled +0.25%. R2K +1.3%

Summary

US equities opened a little choppy, if leaning on the positive side into the late afternoon. The SPX printed 4784, and settling at 4774.

Volatility picked up, but it was mostly technical, the VIX printing 13.77 (cash market), but cooling back to settle -0.3 % to 12.99.

Weekend update - US equity indexes

It was a bullish week for US equity indexes, with net weekly gains ranging from +2.6% (R2K), +1.2% (Nasdaq comp'), +1.0% (NYSE comp'), +0.75% (SPX), +0.3% (Trans), to +0.2% (Dow).

Lets take our regular look at six of the main US indexes (weekly candles)

Summary

All six US equity indexes saw net weekly gains.

The R2K was very significantly higher, whilst the Dow saw a minor gain.

The Dow broke a new historic high.


Looking ahead

It will be a short four day trading week, with Monday CLOSED for Christmas Day. I'd keep in mind, many markets (especially European) will remain shut on Tuesday.

Into the Christmas break

US equity indexes closed somewhat mixed, SPX +7pts (0.2%) at 4754. Nasdaq comp' +0.2%. Dow -0.05%. The Transports settled +0.4%. R2K +0.9%

Summary

US equities opened on a positive note, with the SPX pushing to 4772. From there, cooling into the afternoon to 4736, and recovering to settle marginally higher at 4754.  

Volatility was a little mixed, the VIX printing 13.96, but was ground lower into the Christmas holiday, settling -4.5% to 13.03.

Winter solstice gains

US equity indexes closed significantly higher, SPX +48pts (1.0%) at 4746. Nasdaq comp' +1.3%. Dow +0.9%. The Transports settled +1.7%. R2K +1.8%

Summary

US equities opened broadly higher, with the SPX pushing to 4743. There was some cooling into the early afternoon to 4708, and settling at 4746.

Volatility continued to climb, the VIX printing 14.49, if cooling back to settle -0.15% to 13.65.

Sporadic cooling wave

US equity indexes closed very significantly lower, SPX -70pts (1.5%) at 4698. Nasdaq comp' -1.5%. Dow -1.3%. The Transports settled -2.3%. R2K -2.0%

VIX - daily

Summary

US equities opened in minor chop mode, the SPX leaning upward to print a new cycle high of 4778. From 1pm, the market began to lean weak, with an outright ugly spiral into the late afternoon, printing 4697, and settling at 4698. 

 



Volatility was very mixed, the VIX printing 12.29, but hyper spiking to 13.93, and settling +9.1% to 13.67.
