US equity indexes closed rather mixed, SPX +5pts (0.1%) at 5283. Nasdaq comp' +0.6%. Dow -0.3%. The Transports settled -1.1%. R2K -0.5%

Summary
US equities opened a little higher, the SPX printing 5302. The gains were a little shaky though, with a rather significant downside reversal to 5234.
In mid morning, the machines broke again at the NYSE, with some truly bizarre drops in a fair few stocks, not least GOLD and BRK.A
I'd keep today's malfunction in context to last Thursday, when a few of the indexes weren't printing for an hour. Have you noticed, no one ever explains WHY such events occurred. Its just a case of 'move along.... move along'.

The afternoon saw a recovery to settle fractionally higher at 5283.
Volatility picked up, but the gain was largely technical, the VIX printing 14.31, but cooling back to settle +1.5% to 13.11
