US equity indexes closed significantly lower, SPX -57pts (1.3%) at 4525. Nasdaq comp' -2.3%. Dow -0.8%. The Transports settled -2.8%. R2K -2.3%.

Summary
US equities opened a little weak, but saw an initial recovery with most indexes turning positive. From there... renewed, and increasing downside, with a somewhat ugly closing hour.
Volatility picked up, the VIX settling +13.2% to 21.03.
