OPEX weakness

US equity indexes closed broadly weak, SPX -32pts (0.7%) at 4327. Nasdaq comp' -0.8%. Dow -0.9%. The Transports settled -1.4%.

SPX - daily5

VIX - daily3

Summary

US equities opened moderately higher, but the gains were shaky from the start, and it didn't take long for indexes to turn red.

The afternoon saw further chop, but still leaning on the weaker side. Considering it was OPEX, today's net declines are actually worse than it might seem.

Volatility was mixed, the VIX printing an opening low of 16.03, but then battling upward into the weekend, settling +8.5% to 18.45.

I will just add, today's SPX candle is of the bearish engulfing type, with a mirroring bullish engulfing candle for the VIX. That doesn't mean Monday will gap lower, but it does mean next week should see somewhat lower levels.
