A red Thursday

US equity indexes closed broadly lower, SPX -37pts (0.9%) at 4320. Nasdaq comp' -0.7%. Dow -0.8%. The Transports settled -3.3%.

SPX - daily5

VIX - daily3

Summary

It was a Thursday, and frankly, it wasn't particularly surprising to see more red boxes than green. The gap lower was the largest we've seen in some weeks. The SPX found a floor of 4289, before bouncing into the afternoon, with some moderate chop into the close.

Volatility picked up, with the VIX printing 21.29, and settling +17.3% to 19.00. The s/t outlook favours the equity bears, but broadly... the market looks fine into August, if not to around Labor day.
