Cooling back

US equity indexes closed significantly lower, SPX -60pts (1.1%) at 5614. Nasdaq comp' -1.7%. Dow -0.6%. The Transports settled -0.9%. R2K -0.9%

Summary

US equities opened a little weak, with the SPX cooling to 5597. There was a vain bounce attempt to 5627, and settling at 5614. Volatility picked up, the VIX printing 22.57, and settling +5.8% at 21.70.

Positive Monday

US equity indexes closed broadly higher, SPX +36pts (0.6%) at 5675. Nasdaq comp' +0.3%. Dow +0.8%. The Transports settled +0.8%. R2K +1.2%

Summary

US equities opened broadly flat, but with powerless bears, the SPX clawed upward into the mid afternoon to 5703, and settling at 5675. Volatility was ground lower for the fourth day of five, the VIX settling -5.8% to 20.51.

Weekend update - US equity indexes

It was a bearish week for US equity indexes, with net weekly declines ranging from -6.2% (Trans), -3.1% (Dow), -2.4% (Nasdaq comp'), -2.3% (SPX), -1.7% (NYSE comp'), to -1.5% (R2K).
