A somewhat bearish Monday

US equity indexes closed somewhat mixed, SPX -24pts (0.5%) at 4569. Nasdaq comp' -0.8%. Dow -0.1%. The Transports settled +0.4%. R2K +1.1%

Summary

US equities opened broadly lower, partly cyclical, and partly news related. The SPX saw a morning low of 4546, bounced to 4572, and settling at 4569. Volatility picked up, the VIX printing 13.70, cooling to settle +3.6% at 13.08.

Weekend update - World equity markets

It was a bullish month for world equity markets, with net monthly gains ranging from +40.2% (Argentina), +12.5% (Brazil), +9.5% (Germany), +8.8% (USA), +8.5% (Japan), +8.0% (South Africa), +4.9% (India), +4.7% (Australia), +3.2% (Russia), to +0.4% (China).

Lets take our regular look at ten of the world equity markets.

USA - Dow


Germany – DAX

Japan – Nikkei


Brazil – Bovespa


Russia - RTSI


India – SENSEX


China – Shanghai comp'


South Africa – Dow


Argentina - MerVal


Australia – AORD


Summary

All ten world equity markets were net higher for November.

Argentina was monstrously higher, whilst China was moderately positive.

Argentina broke a new historic high.

Eight markets are trading above their respective monthly 10MA, the two exceptions were China and Australia.

Seven markets have positive monthly momentum, the three exceptions were China, South Africa, and Australia.

December begins positive

US equity indexes closed broadly higher, SPX +26pts (0.6%) at 4594. Nasdaq comp' +0.5%. Dow +0.8%. The Transports settled +3.0%. R2K +2.9%

Summary

The last twenty trading days of the year began a little weak, but all the bears could manage was 4554, before resuming upward. The SPX printed a new cycle high of 4599, and settling at 4594.

Volatility was ground lower into the weekend, the VIX settling -2.2% to 12.63.
