US equity indexes closed significantly lower, SPX -44pts (1.1%) at 3854. Nasdaq comp' -2.3%. Dow -0.5%. The Transports settled -1.1%. R2K -2.0%.

Summary
US equities opened on a weak note, not helped by most other world markets. There was a recovery into the early afternoon, but a secondary wave lower to break a new intraday low into the close.
Volatility picked up... if only a little, the VIX settling +6.2% to 26.17.
