Bearish end to a bullish month

US equity indexes closed broadly lower, SPX -30pts (0.7%) at 4181. Nasdaq comp' -0.8%. Dow -0.5%. The Transports settled -0.5%.

SPX - daily5

VIX - daily3

Summary

US equities opened moderately weak note, with the SPX cooling to 4175 in the early afternoon.

Whilst earnings have been coming in superb for the tech giants, the market still isn't satisfied at times.

Sure, some companies have missed, but most of the time, its not that earnings were bad, but only that they were below expectations.

The afternoon saw further weak leaning chop into the closing hour, with the SPX printing 4174, and settling at 4181. Volatility picked up... if only a little, the VIX settling +5.7% to 18.61.

Just another new historic high

US equity indexes closed on a positive note, SPX +28pts (0.7%) at 4211. Nasdaq comp' +0.2%. Dow +0.7%. The Transports settled +0.9%.

SPX - daily5

VIX - daily3

Summary

US equities opened on a moderately positive, and it was enough for the SPX and Nasdaq comp' to print new historic highs. The opening gains were shaky though, with most indexes turning negative... if fractionally and briefly.

The afternoon saw a secondary swing upward, with the SPX settling at 4211, a level that many would have considered out of range for April, just a month or two ago.

Volatility was itself subdued, the VIX settling +1.9% to 17.61. Another weekly close under the key 20 threshold appears due.

Powell believes inflation will just be... transitory

With Powell touting ongoing QE and ZIRP, the SPX pushed to 4201, if settling at 4183.

It should be clear, no matter how high inflation climbs this summer/autumn, the Fed will deem it 'transitory'.

How the sheep/serfs react to distinctly higher prices in the shops or at the gas station, will be fascinating to see.

Volatility was naturally subdued, the VIX settling -1.6% to 17.28.
