Friday's VIX was unusual

US equity indexes closed moderately mixed, SPX -7pts (0.1%) at 5738. Nasdaq comp' -0.4%. Dow +0.3%. The Transports settled +0.6%. R2K +0.7%

SPX - daily

VIX - daily

Summary

US equities opened in minor chop mode, if leaning upward to sp'5763. The late morning/early afternoon saw a little cooling to 5727, and settling at 5738.

Volatility was mixed, printing an early low of 15.24, but seeing a mini spike to settle +10.3% to 16.96.

Typically, the VIX would be ground lower into the weekend, especially considering today's broadly subdued price action. Its arguable that the VIX is warning of something... perhaps a 'weekend surprise'.
