Weekend update - US equity indexes

It was a bullish week for US equity indexes, with net weekly gains ranging from +5.9% (Nasdaq comp'), +4.3% (R2K), +4.0% (SPX), +2.6% (Dow), +2.5% (NYSE comp'), to +2.0% (Trans).

Lets take our regular look at six of the main US indexes

US equity indexes closed on a positive note, SPX +41pts (0.7%) at 5595. Nasdaq comp' +1.0%. Dow +0.6%. The Transports settled +0.6%. R2K +1.3%

Summary

US equities opened in minor chop mode. The SPX saw a little cooling to 5535, if rebounding to break a new bounce high of 5600, and settling at 5595. Volatility was ground lower for the fifth day of six, the VIX settling -3.5% to 17.07.

US equity indexes mostly closed on a positive note, SPX +58pts (1.1%) at 5554. Nasdaq comp' +2.2%. Dow +0.3%. The Transports settled -0.4%. R2K +0.3%

Summary

US equities opened broadly flat, but the SPX leaned weak, and spiraled to 5406. There was an effective floor from around typical turn time of 11am, with the SPX recovering all the way to build significant gains to 5560, and settling at 5554.

Volatility was very mixed, the VIX spiking to 21.41, but cooling back to settle -7.3% to 17.69.

US equity indexes closed rather mixed, SPX +24pts (0.4%) at 5495. Nasdaq comp' +0.8%. Dow -0.2%. The Transports settled -0.2%. R2K -0.1%

Summary

US equities opened a little choppy. The SPX leaned upward to briefly print 5495, if cooling back to 5441, with a latter day recovery to settle at 5495.

Volatility was a little mixed, the VIX printing a 12pm high of 20.74, but cooling back to settle -1.9% to 19.08.

US equity indexes mostly closed significantly higher, SPX +62pts (1.2%) at 5471. Nasdaq comp' +1.2%. Dow +1.2%. The Transports settled +1.3%. R2K +0.3%

Weekend update - US equity indexes

It was a very bearish week for US equity indexes, with net weekly declines ranging from -5.8% (Nasdaq comp'), -5.5% (R2K), -4.2% (SPX), -3.8% (Trans), -3.3% (NYSE comp'), to -2.9% (Dow).

Summary

All six US equity indexes were net lower for the week.

The R2K lead the way down, whilst the Dow was somewhat resilient. 

More broadly, five indexes have positive monthly momentum, and are trading above their respective monthly 10MA. The exception being the 'old leader' - Transports.

US equity indexes closed very significantly lower, SPX -94pts (1.7%) at 5408. Nasdaq comp' -2.5%. Dow -1.0%. The Transports settled -1.2%. R2K -1.9%

Summary

US equities opened a little choppy, with a vain bounce, to 5522. The SPX duly reversal, and spiraled to 5402, and settling at 5408.

Volatility was very mixed, the VIX printing an early low of 18.83, if spiking upward to 23.76, and settling +12.5% at 22.38.

Summary

US equities opened a little choppy, if mostly leaning upward, the SPX battling to 5546. From 10.30am... some rather significant cooling to 5480. There was a little bounce, to settle -16.66pts to 5503.

Volatility was very mixed, the VIX printing an early low of 19.21, a spike to 21.50, and settling -6.66% to 19.90.

Bearish consolidation

US equity indexes closed a little mixed, SPX -8pts (0.2%) at 5520. Nasdaq comp' -0.3%. Dow +0.1%. The Transports settled +0.4%. R2K -0.2%

Summary

US equities opened a little weak, with the SPX cooling to 5506. From there... an effective bounce from the 50dma to 5552. The afternoon saw renewed cooling to break a new cycle low of 5503, and settling at 5520.

Volatility was a little mixed, the VIX printing a (cash market) high of 22.37, cooling to 19.34, and settling +2.9% at 21.32.

US equity indexes closed very significantly lower, SPX -119pts (2.1%) at 5528. Nasdaq comp' -3.3%. Dow -1.5%. The Transports settled -1.1%. R2K -3.0%

Summary

Equities began September on a distinctly red note, the SPX falling into the late afternoon to 5504, and settling at 5528.  Volatility picked up, the VIX printing 21.99, if cooling back to settle +38.1% to 20.72.
