Weekend update - World equity markets

It was a bullish month for most world equity markets, with net monthly changes ranging from +10.4% (Japan), +6.1% (South Africa), +4.1% (Brazil), +3.0% (Germany), +2.9% (Australia), +1.1% (China), +0.6% (Russia), +0.2% (USA), -1.2% (India), to -17.6% (Argentina).

Lets take our regular look at ten of the world equity markets

Summary

Eight world equity markets were net higher for February, with two net lower.

Japan was very powerfully higher, whilst Argentina was severely lower.

The USA, Japan, Brazil, South Africa, and Australian markets broke new historic highs.

Nine markets are trading above their respective monthly 10MA, the exception being India.

Eight markets have positive monthly momentum, the two exceptions being Russia and India.

US equity indexes closed broadly lower, SPX -29pts (0.4%) at 6878. Nasdaq comp' -0.9%. Dow -1.0%. The Transports settled -0.2%. R2K -1.8%

Summary

Equities opened broadly lower, the SPX printing a morning low of 6831, bouncing to 6877, and settling at 6878.  Volatility picked up, the VIX printing an early high of 21.74, if cooling back to settle +6.6% to 19.86.

A rather mixed Thursday

 US equity indexes closed rather mixed, SPX -37pts (0.5%) at 6908. Nasdaq comp' +1.2%. Dow +0.03%. The Transports settled +2.1%. R2K +0.5%

Summary

US equities opened a little choppy, the SPX printing a high of 6947, but swinging significantly lower to 6859, and settling at 6908.

Volatility was mixed, the VIX printing an early low 17.50, spiking to 20.54, and settling +3.9% to 18.63.

US equity indexes closed significantly lower, SPX-71pts (1.1%) at 6837. Nasdaq comp' -1.1%. Dow -1.7%. The Transports settled -2.8%. R2K -1.7%

US equities opened a little choppy, with the SPX briefly turning positive to 6916, but then spiraling to 6819, with a latter day bounce to settle sig' lower at 6837. 

Volatility picked up, the VIX settling +10.1% to 21.01.

US equity indexes closed somewhat mixed, SPX +7pts (0.1%) at 6843. Nasdaq comp' +0.1%. Dow +0.1%. The Transports settled +1.0%. R2K +0.04%

Summary

US equities opened choppy, with the SPX taking a swing lower to 6775. From there... a few bounce attempts, printing a high of 6866, and settling at 6843. Underlying price action is not so pretty, as net downside to around 6600 looks increasingly probable... whether next week, or first week of March.

Volatility saw an early high of 22.96, if cooling back to settle -1.5% to 20.29.
