Weekend update - World equity markets

It was a mixed month for world equity markets, with net monthly changes ranging from +6.3% (South Africa), +5.2% (Japan), +3.2% (Brazil), +1.9% (USA), +0.6% (India, China), -0.1% (Germany), -1.2% (Australia), -7.3% (Russia), to -10.5% (Argentina).

Lets take our regular look at ten of the world equity markets.

USA - Dow

Germany – DAX

Japan – Nikkei

Brazil – Bovespa

 

Russia - MOEX

India – SENSEX

China – Shanghai comp'

South Africa – Dow

Argentina - MerVal

Australia – AORD

Summary

Six world equity markets were net higher for September, with four net lower.

South Africa was very powerfully higher, whilst Argentina was severely lower.

The USA, Japanese, Brazilian, and South African markets broke new historic highs.

Eight markets are trading above their respective monthly 10MA, the two exceptions being Russian and Argentina.

Seven markets have positive monthly momentum, the three exceptions being Russia, India, and Argentina.

Volatility remained subdued, the VIX printing a (cash market) high of 16.82, but cooling back to settle  +0.1% to 16.29.

Summary

US equities opened positive, with the SPX printing a high of 6677, if cooling back to 6661. Today's SPX candle is black doji, which leans net bearish into end month/quarter. On a stretch... the bears might print the 6580s with VIX 18s.  

Volatility picked up, but most of the gain was technical (due to the new week), the VIX settling +5.4% to 16.12.
